I am sure that if anything like this ever happened to me I would never go into the woods again! What goes through your mind in such a situation? Were you terrified? Were you shocked?? I mean, this has to be one stressful experience! Why didn't you kill the snake? What if someone else was hiking back there and got bit by the same snake, wouldn't that bother you?

Years ago we were camping in a park in Tenn. when I was bitten by a copperhead about two feet long. They are supposed to be mildly poisonous but I darned near lost my hand. My arm turned black and I lost a lot of tisue. I have the use of the hand today but for a while there it was an iffy thing.
Thanks for the article, I never looked at it from the snake's point of view before,
Still a hiker

Oh yeah!
Hoop snakes and puff adders, I know them well. To be honest with you I have met a lot of people that could kill with their breath but never a snake.
There are all sort of snake stories floating around out there and most of them are definitely stranger than fiction. Most of those stories lost their origin in the thick mists of the story tellers illusory fantasy.
Snakes, by their very being give rise to some pretty fantastical images of the mind.

Until the day he died my grandfather swore that there was such a snake as the hoop snake. He was from the Ozarks and he told of instances where folks had been killed by this deadly snake. He also told of the puff adder which would blow into its victims face and the person would die.
He said that when he was a young man he was chased by a hoop snake. The thing grabbed its tail in its mouth and rolled after him and tried to spear him with its tail. I might be somewhat gullible but that is a story I find a bit difficult to believe! Have you heard these "stories"?

Very informative.... since I did not know that at times the rattlers could lose their rattles and there is no warning sound. I would enjoy learning more about what happens after a bite..... since I have never been bitten, it would be even more informative to learn the events of "after the bite"
Thank you....
