Chaz, you are right. Circumcision is practiced by the vast majority of African tribal groups.
Concerning Prof. Pinky's question: When Koyei speaks of the "uncircumcised" he is most likely using a form of hyperbole to describe those "others' or, unbelievers amost in a Semitic linguistic fashion.
The children of Isreal approached unbelievers from the same viewpoint.
The word "uncircumcised" used in this sense denotes a rebellious or stiff necked people in the old testament of the Christian bible.
I believe, though I might be mistaken on this point, the Maasai claim to be descendents of Abraham which would explain some of their stance on this "cutting" subject.
Clive

Dear Prof Pinky,
That is an interesting question and one that I will pose to Koyei. When I get his reply I will post it.
From what I understand circumcision is more common then not and is practiced widely by the vast majority of African linguistic and cultural groups.
Chaz

I'm curious - following is a line in the Maasai song that is included in this blog entry:
…we have raided the homes of uncircumcised men and bought back our tokens…"
This leads the reader to think that the Maasi believe circumcision is a superior practice. Why would one culture group living within the same terrain choose circumcision and another culture group choose not to circumcise? Can Koyei Lesiles offer an explanation?
Prof Pinky

Charles, Thanks for the email reminding me to visit. You are such a good writer. You make it easy to "Picture" scene. Your stories are alive.

Ken

Chuck,
Good work! Of course, I liked the Maasai story best. (I’m looking at the Maasai milk gourd hanging over my desk as I write.) You’ve got a lot to share; keep writing it out. We go to Maine in a couple days for the rest of the summer—until the leaves fall. Blessings to you both.
Mike H.

Dear Ev,
One thing they seldom talk about is the dead, it is forbidden. Another thing they believe is that all of the cattle in the world belong to them. As you can imagine this creates some small amount of dissension among other tribes when the Maasai form raids and rustle their cattle. Men are killed in these raids by arrow and spear.
They call themselves"The People" and first, or original man. They believe they are God's chosen people.
These are a unique people to say the least.
I have had a love affair with the Maasai from the time as a child I traveled to Fields Museum in Chicago and saw the diorama in the great hall. All I can say about that is, WOW!
Chaz

Chaz
Dennis and I and the two kids recently went to Africa. While there we went to a Masai village (boma), talked to Masai warriors, saw the dancing and the very high jumping, saw many lions in the wild, went to the Oldupai Gorge where the Leakeys worked, etc. It was an amazing trip.
We will have to get together some time soon so that you can see whatever pictures and videos you might want. We have TOO many to see them all….
We learned about the value of cattle to the Masai, but I did not know that warriors donated a cow to the family of a fallen warrior in his honor. That is quite a gift, considering how much cattle mean to them…. You captured the essence of being a Masai!
Ev

My dear friend and brother Koyei,
You give me far too much credit. I look forward to the day when I can walk beside you in the great Rift valley.
When it comes to being a warrior my friend you have proven yourself many times over and you carry the scars to prove your bravery and incredible courage.
May our magnificent God bless you and your family and keep you safe is my prayer.
Most sincerely, your brother, Charles, a fellow traveler

Sir Charles,
You are a warrior:
You a warrior who can get places and you have saved a lot of Natural habitat by your words.
I respect you Charles for the care you are giving to the Bears. As we all know the Bears are one of the world's endagered species, and through your courage you are able to do alot in those Florida's Parks I once visited with you before sun-rise.
like Maasai worriors who are known for their bravery, I count you more couragious as one of us. As we patrol the great rift valley barely armed with spears and swords following the spoor of the lions that may have attacked our cows, you follow the Bears with only a camera and that's why I say( YOU ARE A WARRIOR AND THAT IS WHY I SAY I RESPECT YOU).

May God Almighty bless you and please keep up the wonderful work you are doing.

Joseph Koyei,

Maasai Cultural Ambassador.Kenya
