Dear Carole, Nope, there are still plenty of the little twinklers out there but for how long I can’t imagine.
About the best place to see lightning bugs is down in the riverine habitat or at the verge of the swamp. It is a veritable fairyland in the spring of the year with the little creatures flashing all around you.
I wouldn’t feed them to uncle George today. Nope, for two reasons, one is that he has gone to his rest long ago and two, it would be cockroaches! They taste worse, far worse than lightning bugs. Don’t ask me how I know.

Charles, By the way, why don’t we see lightning bugs anymore? Did we kill them all off with
pesticides? The last flurry of lightning bugs I saw was over in Leesburg at a preserve when we
went camping about 12 years ago. It was a beautiful sight.

Hey!
I seem to recall some muzzleloaders, and lots of gunpowder and a few pre-teen boys knocked off their feet in our backyard when I was a little squirt…and I do believe YOU were the “uncle George” of that story!!!
I wonder if any of them ever paid YOU back?

Dear Canada, I know you! Do you remember that cassarole you thought was so delicious? Heh, heh, heh.
Uncle george is long gone to a better place. I wonder how large the lightning bugs are in heaven and do you suppose they taste better?
It is interesting to note that The Old Chief never said anything to me about the lightning bug episode. I think he might have been pleased to see George get his come uppance from a little kid. Thanks for the comment even if it did cast doubt upon my sterling character. Chaz

I sure am glad that I live in Canada and not Florida. Would hate to imagine what would happen to me if I was invited to stay at the Towne home. Ooooo…scary! I do remember lightning bugs…we see lots of them in the summer here, I will honestly say that I have never had the urge to taste one. Now be honest, fess up, is this a tall tale or do you really have an Uncle George, or should I say, “still have.” We need to hear episode two, when Dad came home, or when you came back with the fish….love to you. Dear Dave, You are mistaken, I was not laughing I was weeping with deep feelings of grief, remorse and repentence for what I had done to my dear uncle George. If I had it all to do again it would be something real gross but at that time my imagi-bird was an infant and not very creative.
Dear Anonymous, I am glad you liked the story but I am sorry if I gave offense, I want the blog to be user friendly for everybody.
These are experiences that I lived and Uncle George deserved the dessert I fed him that long ago day.
