How much of a delight it is to remember the "sounds of the wild"....... it is of majestic proportion..... there is also another sound that I enjoy very much in the wonderful woods..... that is the "Sound of Silence".... I believe it is one of the natural healer to all who learn how to listen.
Tio

Hey you, how very precious that you remember the whippoorwill and the porcupine.
One other sound we heard on that long ago night. The yip, yip, yipping of coyotes on the other side of the lake. What wonderful memories, and to think that our Father created in us the gift of total recall.
I love you my special little wildling,
Daddy

Dad,
There are many sounds of the night that I dearly love. One of my favorite, here in the North, is the sweet sound of the spring peepers! They give us a promise of spring...and their happy chirping in the night brings joy to my heart...and sometimes nearly deafens me with the cacaphony of thousands of little frogs...announcing the season!
Another favorite night sound is the gentle rain on my window...especially falling on the skylight in my office where I now sit listening to the rumble of thunder in the distance, and the spatter of huge raindrops drip, drip, dripping...and it is so sweet.
But, the one sound that seems the most desirable, in my sentimental heart...has to be the Whippoorwhil...it's lonesome cry in the nights of my youth, touching my heart with a sweet memory of a long ago night when my daddy and I went out to a deer blind late at night to watch deer and see what we could see. I will never forget that unforgettable night... I was so tired that I spilled my pop on my leg when you asked me what time it was...duh! And we found a grandaddy porcupine slowly walking along the trail. But, the most amazing thing of all that night was when two bright little eyes shone in the headlights as we were leaving, and you, being the nature nut you are...and taught me to be...got out of the van and walked ahead and picked up the little creature and brought it back to show me.
It was a whipporwhill! Such a rare thing to see one, they are such amazing little things, expert at staying out of sight.
I held the little bird in my hand and knew that probably never again this side of heaven would I have the joy of holding one and it mesmerized me.
All the nights I slept at Grandma's house I heard those sweet sounds but only rarely do I hear them now, and when I do, my heart leaps...and I dream of a long ago night,so sweet to my mind!
Love you Dad, Faith
