Dear Ron, Smart? Yes, they are very intelligent, much more so than most want to acknowledge. They are now acknowledged to be on an equal par with the more intelligent primates. People don't want to attribute intelligence, or feelings to animals because if they do so it would make it more difficult to kill them in the name of 'sport'. Bears have a reasoning capacity and dexterity that belies their apparent awkward appearance. A bear can unscrew fruit jar lids, pick up a single acorn, etc. the only thing he hasn't seemingly figured out is how to avoid man. You have a nice day now ya hear, Chaz

Wow! Bears sound like amazing creatures. It's incredible how acute their senses are. I really didn't know how smart bears could be.

Dear mh, actually caves aren't that bad. Of course if a bear shows up and tells you to evacuate the premises it's best to do so without any argument. Thanks for the encouragement and keep watch over your shoulder and in those deep dark shadows that seem to mysteriously move. Oh yes, shadows don't growl do they? Chaz

Wow! The stuff that nightmares are made of. I can relate to the later men, those sitting and staring into the darkness. I can almost hear the bear moving out there in the darkness. Sort of gives me the feeling of the movie, 'THE EDGE' with Anthony Perkins and Robert Gere. <br/>You tell a wicked tale.
