It's too bad that Man has once again screwed up something so beautiful just in the name of making a profit. This is a valuable story that people should be able to learn from.

Well...I am a Northerner, and I truly love a good Florida Orange when I can get one, which, may become less likely every year because the last time I came down South, most of the groves had been overcome by condos and luxury homes and streets plugged with PEOPLE! Now, with the gas prices rising, it is less likely that the fruit will make it up North as frequently...or that as many of the "fruitcakes" will hightail it South in the winter! Fact is...people make a mess of pretty much everything...but, then again, without people, the world would be a lonely place for all those bass!
Keep looking up!
mh

Dear Go Stuff an Orange, Sir, I am somewhat puzzled. I don't know if go stuff an orange is an attempt at being nasty on your part or a recipe. I also don't know if you purposely misspelled 'grown' instead of grown and used the more appropriate 'groan' pertaining to the negative impact the burgoening population has had on Florida's natural environment. If that is the case I applaud you and yes, I am a darned yankee.
Chaz
P.S. Please send me your recipe for stuffed oranges, sounds delicious.

Dear sir, without the citrus industry central florida would never have groan the way it has. The tourist industry would never have groan. You damned yankees would never had come here and I would never have met my wife which would have been a good thing,We would not have Mickey mouse, or sea world where I work. My point is, hell, I don't know what my point is.
Go Stuff an Orange!

Dear Chaz, Whoever mentioned the large corn fields is so very right. Mega-agriculture of any type contributes to the problem. Sustainable yield seems to be a watchword for big agriculture. It is sad that they can't seem to place the same value upon a pure lake that they do that sweet corn. Of coarse they are making mega bucks off the mega crops.
Good, thought provoking commentary.

Dear Fishing Schoolteacher,
I certainly hope you taught your students how to fish!
Those old boys hiding under their bedsheets don't scare me much unless they start threatening to take my favorite fishing hole away from me.
You know, given enough time and man doesn't foul it up again Lake Apopka Just might come back to life!
You have a nice day now ya hear, Chaz

I love the way you beat up on citrus as you wrote about our lake. People do some crazy things in the name of progress and all too often they turn what they touch into a vile, corrupt mess. I fished Lake Apopka as a kid. That was over fifty years ago and let me tell you we caught lunker bass. You want to be careful picking on the citrus industry though. There were a lot of those old boys that would dress up in bed sheets of a friday night and pledge allegiance to their favorite cause which sometimes led to some nasty consequences for anybody they dissagreed with.
Fishing Schoolteacher
