Jeff, my father, now passed away some few years past said, "the best science is direct observation independent of theory." What a wise comment from a man with a third grade education! He had a lot of moxy.
I have lived a life up close and personal with nature.
It might seem somewhat simplistic but the best definition of "naturalist" is, "a student of nature."
The out of doors, the wild places, the forests and streams have been and continue to be my classroom. This is what the creator of all things, my God, intended to my way of thinking.
That wise old man of the mountains, John Muir said: "Go to the mountains and they will teach you..."
School is still in and your tuition has been payed. Take a walk, breathe in the fresh air, learn where the sages learned and may God bless you,
Chaz

I respect the wild and wild things. I really do. When someone says something like, 'we should all exist in harmony, like nature' it makes me totally insane. A picture of harmony Nature is NOT. Now if someone says a picture of BALANCE, I'm with them.

Your story (very well-told) illustrates that. Heron in another heron's territory equals a dead heron. Balance restored.

Nature can be a scary place.

I do enjoy all your stories. Always entertaining! I did come upon a Cooper's Hawk last year out on Dauphin Island. He was in the process of finishing up some type of avian feast (it was a little too late to determine species). I was about 30 feet away from him with my
binoculars and he seemed unperturbed by my presence as he finished his
meal.

John

Charles, Man, do you ever know how to paint a picture with words! I can see the attack taking place like I was there with you. That had to be based on territorial protection, nothing else could possibly explain it. I was a biologist with the State of Minnisota and Montana and have spent a lot of time in the woods and streams and I have seen some strange things myself. Once I watched as four adult raccoons attacked and killed another of their kind. If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it. What a time to be without a camera! Oh well, there is tomorrow.
Twister
